When life gets overwhelming, it is often tempting to bury our head in the sand and pretend like problems don’t exist. If you are anything like me, you might find yourself up to your eyeballs in problems. Some small, some big but all demanding our attention. No matter what direction you look, there seems to be things that needs to be fixed. So many times we sit in the boat and expect God to bring peace to our circumstances by calming the elements that are disturbing our peace. While he can exert power over our circumstances, we see another aspect of God’s peace in this story. Christ desires to bring peace not just to our external environment but in our internal beings as well. When we, in faith, trust our lives into the Lord’s hands, assured of His great love toward us, we are filled with a peace that transcends our circumstances. When this is the case, we are able to walk through any circumstance without flinching in fear. In a world full of troubles, waiting for blue skies and rainbows is going to keep you standing idle outside the realm of usefulness.
We are called to be a reflection of Christ, the Prince of Peace, Isaiah 9:6 in the midst of the chaos of this world. This cannot happen if we are constantly trying to avoid the fray or if we expect God to spare us from the turmoil. “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on Earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Helping us overcome the winds and waves of life is very different from sparing us from them. Rather, like Christ, walking confidently through the winds and waves keeps life’s circumstances from dictating our direction and state. The God of peace imparts personal peace that brings freedom to our actions and allows us to display hope to the world around us.
Let me encourage you - next time you experience one of life’s many problems, instead of simply hiding behind the refuge that is God our protector, seize the power and authority that He has placed in your hand and partner with Him to walk through that storm confident that no weapon formed against you can prosper!
